It is a technique that was introduced to rural Indonesian communities so they may learn new skills and derive additional income for their livelihood. These unique shoes are fair trade, made with care and love in small quantities by generations living together in Balinese households.
The palm leaves are pure, dry leaves that are harvested and treated in the most environmentally friendly way through the support of Indonesian local communities and small businesses. No chemicals are used to make them strong - the are just cut and dried.
The resulting product is like artwork for your feet, in plant-based colours including green, yellow and neutral (pictured above).
I’m seeing this shoe as a feel-good, low-cost-per-wear alternative to many of the resort-wear labels for the summer ahead. Pair them with a floaty floral dress or a shorts suit and Panama, for the occasions where sneakers just won’t cut it.
